Assignment: Formal and Functional Grammar

 Functional Grammar (G1)

  • Will be able to use language in situations
  • It makes traditional/ formal grammar more simple and easy to understand.
  • Concerns about the meaning of whole texts rather than the order of words in a sentence like formal grammar.

Formal Grammar (G2)
  • Traditional
  • Focus on the forms of the words and patterns rather than their meaning.
  • Focus on theoretical grammar
  • Students are asked to learn rules byheart.
  • Termed as G2.
Methods of teaching grammar:

1. Inductive Method
  • It leads the learner to discover the truth for himself.
  • Through facts and examples, learner will be able to arrive at conclusions.
  • Examples are given to the students and teacher concerns on learner's active participation.
  • Exercises are given for practice.
Aim:
  • Thought and expression
  • Develop language skills
  • Provide opportunity for pattern practice.
Steps:
  • Present examples and illustrations.
  • Analysis of examples.
  • Generalisations.
  • Identification of rules.
  • Focused practice.
  • Communicative practices.
  • Feedback and correction.
Merits:
  • Communicative competence
  • Confidence to use the language.
  • Ensure active participation.
  • Reduces dependence on memorisation.
  • Interesting method.
  • Develop problem solving ability.
Demerits
  • Lot of time required.
  • Teacher's increased workload.
2. Deductive Method
  • Teacher states rules and definitions.
  • Examples will be given.
  • Students are asked to learn byheart.
  • Exercises are given.
  • Correction and feedback.
Merits:
  • Easy to teach.
  • Saves time.
  • Glorifies memory.
Demerits
  • Ignore communicative aspects of language.
  • Uninteresting.
  • Ignores understanding.
  • Over emphasis on memory.
  • Participation is less.
  • Difficult for comprehension.
  • It doesn't focus on thought and expression.
